Engineering ScriptStream for the reality of Australian electronic prescribing.

BOP Plus created ScriptStream to make specialist prescribing more practical. Twin Global turned that vision into a working digital product—engineering the prescribing workflow, connecting it to Australian digital-health services and working through the conformance, exception handling and release preparation required to move into real use.

Current status: ScriptStream is released and in early production, with real prescribers using the platform while onboarding, script imports, testing and further development continue.

The challenge

The hard part was not the prescription form. It was the responsibility around it.

In an Australian specialist practice, several people may contribute to the prescribing process, but the authorised prescriber remains responsible for the final review and approval. ScriptStream therefore had to do more than store prescription details: it needed to make ownership, status, exceptions and the next action unmistakable throughout the workflow.

On screen, the experience looks straightforward: prepare and review a prescription, complete authority-related steps where required, approve it and submit electronically through eRx. Behind that experience sits the harder engineering challenge—turning clinical-service responsibilities into controlled software behaviour that can exchange information reliably with external health services and recover when something does not go to plan.

  • Separate preparation and review from final prescriber approval.
  • Keep outstanding work, prescription status and exceptions visible.
  • Support correction and retry paths when an external step does not complete normally.
  • Make the interface practical for specialist clinics without hiding the controls required by the workflow.

From requirements to product behaviour

Twin translated a specialist operating model into a product people can actually use.

Instead of treating ScriptStream as a collection of forms, the team organised the product around the work users actually perform: create or prepare prescription information, review what is outstanding, obtain the required authority where applicable, approve the prescription and move it towards electronic submission.

ScriptStream provides structured creation paths for specialist prescribing scenarios. Twin’s product work connected those fields, validation rules and user states to the wider workflow rather than leaving staff to manage the process across disconnected tools.

Australian healthcare integration

Behind every simple user action sat a network of Australian health-system dependencies.

Moving ScriptStream into real use meant connecting the specialist workflow to the Australian digital-health services that support electronic prescribing. Twin Global worked through service contracts, identifiers, credentials, external environments, conformance scenarios and the failure paths hidden behind actions that should feel simple to the prescriber.

That work covered Healthcare Identifiers, eRx ETP1 and ETP2, Australian Digital Health Agency electronic-prescribing requirements, PBS authority-related workflows and PRODA-related access arrangements. It also included certificates and credentials, external test environments, production preparation, failure and correction paths, status visibility and representative end-to-end scenarios.

Integration and conformance milestones

From build to real use

Release turned the programme from a build into a living product.

ScriptStream has been released and is now in early production with real prescribers. Reaching that point required far more than feature completion: external access, credentials, representative end-to-end scenarios, deployment preparation, status visibility and a practical way to respond when real prescribing journeys expose the next issue to solve.

Twin Global remains involved as BOP Plus continues onboarding, script imports, testing and further product development. That continuity matters in regulated software, because the platform has to keep evolving as real users, external services and operating requirements expose the next set of priorities.
